During a vacation in the Pacific Northwest with his wife, Alice Wake, Wake encountered a force of supernatural darkness. It brought Wake's horror story to life. He was a bestselling writer in New York City when he disappeared in 2010. His battle with this dark presence led him to banish it to where it came from, a nightmarish dark place hidden under a caldera lake outside the small town of Bright Falls. After writing an ending to his horror story, Wake freed his wife from the darkness under the lake, but he became trapped there as well.
