Easy-to-use controls for fast setup

Blackmagic Camera has all the controls you need to quickly setup and start shooting! Everything is interactive, so you can touch any item and change settings instantly without navigating confusing menus! A heads-up display, or HUD, displays information about camera settings, a histogram, focus peaking, levels, frame guides, and more. By swiping up or down, you can show or hide the HUD. You can focus by tapping the screen in the area you want. With this app, you can shoot in 16:9 or vertical aspect ratios, or shoot while holding the phone vertically if you want to shoot unobtrusively. You can also upload to Blackmagic Cloud, chat, and access advanced menus.

Heads-up display on screen

It displays the most important camera controls, such as lens selection, frame rate, shutter angle, timecode, ISO, white balance, tint, histogram and audio levels, on a heads up display or HUD. It's that easy! With the ISO indicator, you can adjust exposure, and the audio meters, you can change audio levels. Everything is interactive, so you don't have to go through complicated menus to change settings! The heads up display can be cleared to reveal the full screen image by swiping up or down.

Status

Various camera settings can also be changed by touching the specific setting across the top of the screen. An easy-to-use adjustment palette comes up.

Lens

The camera's lens lets you choose a focal length for your shot. Cell phones usually come with three rear lenses, ranging from 13mm to 24mm, as well as a front lens. The iris is automatically set according to the focal length you have selected.

Frames Per Second

Your phone model determines the frame rate adjustment. In most cases, you are able to adjust the frame rate from the preset 24 fps up to 60 fps.

Shutter Speed

The shutter speed lets you adjust for varying lighting conditions or control motion blur. You can select your shutter speed manually or choose from suggested speeds by scrolling the dial.

Timecode

The timecode indicator displays either the duration of your recording or the time of day. While recording, the timecode turns red and displays the embedded timecode as the clip plays back.

Project Name Indicator

From the media tab, you can select a DaVinci Resolve project to record to, and the project name will be displayed in the HUD above the timecode.

ISO

The ISO setting adjusts the camera's sensitivity to light. ISO 100 is great for outdoors, and ISO 1600 is ideal for low-light conditions.

White Balance/Tint

With white balance, you can adjust the light temperature. Common presets include sunlight, overcast light, and fluorescent light, but you can also set it manually.

Resolution

Using the status display, you can see what resolution you are shooting in at a glance, whether it is 720p, 1080p, or up to 4K.

Histogram

You can use the histogram to check exposure. The left side shows shadows, and the right side shows highlights. If the edges of the histogram abruptly stop, adjust exposure to prevent clipping.

Audio Meters

The audio meters can be used to monitor the recording levels of the internal microphone or external sources. For the audio meters to function properly, the peak levels should fall in the green zone at the top.

Record Button

A single tap on the record button starts and stops recording. When recording, the button and timecode at the top of the screen turn red.

Storage Indicator

A storage indicator shows how much recording time is left on your phone's internal memory in hours, minutes, and seconds. To enable the storage indicator, access the settings menu and select the storage indicator option.

Upload Indicator

During an upload to Blackmagic Cloud, you can see the clip's name, upload speed, percentage of the clip uploaded, and remaining upload time.

Zebra

A Zebra display will draw diagonal lines on areas of your image that have excessive exposure levels. Using the variable control with the histogram, you can determine the best exposure for any scene.

Focus Assist

A feature that adds a colored highlight to fine image details, allowing manual focus to be used for cinematic effects.

Grids

The grid control adds on-screen markers for framing and positioning shots, such as the rule of thirds grid, crosshairs, and a center dot.

Frame Guides

Digital film can be shot in other aspect ratios, such as 1.85:1, 2.35:1, 2.39:1 and 2.40:1, or 9:16, 1:1 and 4:5 for social media.

Safe Area Guides

The safe area guides allow operators to avoid cutting off important image content due to too close proximity to the screen edge.

False Color

Color overlays are used to represent different exposure values, such as pink representing the best exposure for lighter skintones, green for darker skintones, and red for overexposed skintones.

3D LUT Indicator

When in use, the LCD display displays a LUT icon in the top left corner of the screen, so you can see what your shot will look like after color correction.

Touch to Focus

With touch to focus, you can focus your lens on any part of the image by tapping the screen. Touch and hold to lock the focus and exposure.

Auto Exposure

Tap anywhere on the screen to quickly set that area as your auto focus area and auto exposure will automatically adjust ISO and shutter angle.

Image Stabilization

With image stabilization, you can make your video look more professional by preventing shaky footage. You can choose from various levels of stabilization, including cinematic for smoother motion.

Zoom Control

You can zoom up to x8 using presets, or zoom manually up to 15x by scrolling the scale. Tap the zoom icon to hide the display and return to full screen.

Entering Metadata

With metadata, you can sort and process footage easier in post production. The slate allows you to add additional details, such as shot type and project name.

Menus for camera setup

The settings tab unlocks the full power of the phone's camera, with quick access to advanced settings such as monitoring, audio, camera setup, recording and more! Under the record tab, you can set video resolutions and recording formats such as Apple ProRes or space-saving H.264 and H.265. Additionally, you can adjust anamorphic de-squeeze and lens correction settings. Various audio formats are available, including VU or PPM audio meters and AAC, IEEE Float, and PCM. You can even add external microphones! Blackmagic Camera also includes professional monitoring features such as zebra settings for checking exposure, focus assist, frame guides, and more.

Media

Besides browsing and scouring clips for quick review, you can search and sort and view the status of your media on the Blackmagic Camera media tab. You can also link to your photos and select clips to upload to the Blackmagic Cloud. Simply choose the Media button to see thumbnails for each clip in Blackmagic Camera's all clips folder. The media can be saved to the phone's files folder, sent to Blackmagic Cloud Storage via Blackmagic Cloud, or manually selected for upload to the project library. You can even sync media directly from Blackmagic Camera into a DaVinci Resolve project so you’re ready to edit and color grade!

By using multiple cameras in different locations, media can be continuously added to the project and then automatically synced to other project members using Blackmagic Cloud. The proxy media can be used by anyone, and colorists or finishers can download the original high-resolution camera originals and render. It's a quick, seamless, and automatic way to collaborate.

Free download of DaVinci Resolve!

With a free version of DaVinci Resolve, you can learn how to use the same creative tools as Hollywood artists. DaVinci Resolve is designed to inspire creativity so you can do your best work. A Blackmagic Camera can be used to sync media directly into a DaVinci Resolve project through cloud storage. Once you learn the software and start using it for more work, you can purchase DaVinci Resolve Studio, which includes tons of additional effects, AI tools, and more. Additionally, you can add an editor keyboard, color control panel, or audio console to use both hands at once, making your work faster and more creative.

Multicam Editing Sync Bin

When shooting multiple cameras, the sync bin is the fastest and most innovative way to select the perfect cutaway. With the time of day timecode, you can sync clips shot on multiple phones at the same time. Select the sync bin icon in DaVinci and all clips synced to the timeline will appear in a multiview. The clips that sync to the point in the timeline will appear as you scroll up and down the timeline, so you can choose the best cutaway by scrolling up and down. Use the source overwrite edit mode to add the selected clip to the timeline, perfectly synced with the clip below by clicking the view and adjusting the in and out points.

Get in touch with editors via chat

In Blackmagic Camera, there is a built-in chat workspace so members of Blackmagic Cloud projects can quickly discuss shots and share creative ideas. You can quickly message editors, assistants, colorists or VFX artists regarding shot selection or to get an update on the project. Just log in to Blackmagic Cloud and select the project you're working on. The entire team will be able to see your message and reply instantly.
